We got to Ajmer and I am no longer a pilgrim but ordinary tourist, white guy, rich foreigner to be targeted, my crew scattered around the city and I am sitting on the bank of holy lake and talk to a baba who put aside his morning paper. His white robes dry in annoying morning heat and annoying beggars don’t give up their assault on me, poking and pinching, interrupting conversation. Parmanand,  name of the baba, means eternally happy. He doesn’t wear any insignia or symbols of particular religion, but his big white beard and, most of all, very confident but easy going style, some lightness about him testify to his high spiritual status. He says he comes from Hindu background, as most of the pilgrims coming to visit this Muslim shrine, but all that is relative and irrelevant. He tells me a story. He went to one of those free kitchens near dargah , that distribute langar for the poor. As he was standing in the line for his food, the server asked him :

- Are you Muslim?

- And what is the relation of food and religion? – Parmanand answered with question

The beggar nearest to me resumed his pinching, this time combining it with banging me on the head with one hand, while hitting his plastic leg with wooden staff at the same time. Parmanand smiles with a hint of embarrassment.

Dotarliśmy do Ajmer, i nie jestem juz pielgrzymem, a białasem, bogatym cudzoziemcem, moja ekipa rozlazła się po mieście a ja siedzę nad brzegiem jeziora i rozmawiam z babą który przerwał czytanie swojej porannej gazety. Jego białe szaty suszą się w nachalnym jak na ósmą rano słońcu, a nachalni żebracy nie dają za wygraną, szturachają i szczypią mnie przerywając nam rozmowę. Parmanand, wiecznie szczęśliwy, bo to oznacza jego imię, nie nosi ozdób ani symboli żadnej religii, ale długa broda a przede wszystkim lekki sposób bycia wskazują na jego poważną pozycję w duchowej branży. Mówi, że pochodzi ze środowiska hinduistycznego, jak wielu pielgrzymów do tego muzułmańskiego sanktuarium, ale to wszystko jest umowne. Opowiada jak poszedł niedaleko świątyni gdzie w jednej z licznych kuchni wydawane są posiłki dla ubogich. Stanał w kolejce, a tam się serwujący pyta :

- Czy jesteś muzułmaninem?

- A jaki jest związek jedzenia i religii ? – odpowiedział pytaniem Parmanand

Żebrak wznowił szczypanie a do repertuaru dołożył walenie mnie po głowie a siebie po protezie nogi. Parmanand uśmiecha się zażenowany.

To believe in something and to mix it with a sense of humour. There are two ways of living your life , giving a fuck and not giving a fuck. But you can also give a fuck, with that spark in the eye and without that self rightheousness, can you?

Oh yeah, as always, we get high first /  Na początek trzeba wprowadzić się w odpowiedni nastrój za pomocą odpowiedniego lekarstwa

Refreshing bath in Anasagar holy lake of Ajmer will wash the sins and dust of the road. /  Odświeżająca kąpiel w świętym jeziorze Anasagar zmywa grzechy i brud z wędrówki

Holy flags and banners need to be carried into the dargah /  Święte sztandary muszą zostać wniesione na teren świątyni w uroczystej procesji

Prayers to the saint left by his grave. / Modlitwy do świętych umieszczone przy ich grobach

By the time we visit all these holy stones and places of the legend, it is getting really hot / Zanim zaliczymy wszystkie kamienie z legendy i inne święte miejsca, robi się naprawdę gorąco, jest przecież koniec maja.

Perhaps it is time then for afternoon nap / Być może jest więc to czas na popołudniową drzemkę

Then some chai / Potem nieco herbatki na przebudzenie z lepkiego snu

Next, why not get stoned again / Następnie możnaby zaliczyć kolejną fajeczkę

Good way to spend rest of the day can be playing with some sharp objects. / Dobrym sposobem na spędzenie reszty dnia jest zabawa ostrymi narzędziami

To cool down, we listen to some music now. Sound system is not the most impressive, but ambiance is great./ Dla odprężenia warto zrobić przerwę muzyczną. Nagłośnienie domowej roboty, ale klimacik pierwsza klasa.

Ale to w porządku, dawno temu stwierdziłem, że wychodzenie na miasto w sobotni wieczór jest równie nudne jak praca od 9 do 17 ( czy do której się tam pracuje )
