Once a year Tuaregs of southern Algeria gather with their 4x4s and camels, put on the best indigo turbans and dance with swords to their female folk chanting and clapping and beating tinde drums in remembrance of ancient conflict and peace that followed. Shrieking of the desert women pierces your ears and aggresive dust kills digital equipment. Festival of Sebeiba.

Wysokie tony wibracji z gardeł kobiet pustyni przeszywają bębenki a wszechobecny kurz morduje cyfrowy sprzęt. Sebeiba.

Afars, that cliche of unruly wild nomads of eastern wilderness that would cut off your genitals and nail them on their tent frame. Are they still out there? The day we came to one of villages, was just a week after a brawl about water and cattle with neighbouring tribe of Issa which they hate a lot. A dozen of people was slain, they claim, and the Afars were victorious. Here even the women know how to defend themselves, but of course it is more a boys game.

***

It is easy to romanticize but it is a hard life, and women are those who must bear more of the hardship, as always when boys are gathered in the market place with their metal toys planning another raid.

***

However, as usually with the nomads, there is something in the air, some spirit of independence, dreaming quality, lightness of being that I can never sense or experience in settled communities. Perhaps it is having a little in terms of objects and more wealth located in moving, living creatures, perhaps aided by their drugs, I don’t care so much when the mood is right and the spirit high.

***

The thing is, what no stick of government and its weaponry could do to subdue and settle the Afars, is being done by carrot of ready access to water , precious resource for nomads, that turns them into flies gathered around the puddle, combined with temptations of civilization ( Facebook accounts ) , and spiced up with usual useful religious brainwashing.

***
