Pierwszy z klipów to nocna sesja z grobowca Shah Jamal w Lahore w Pakistanie, gdzie nabuzowani haszyszem derwisze rozrabiają przy akompaniamencie bębnów znanych w Polsce z książki “Pijani Bogiem” braci Sain.

***

I am too impulsive and impatient for video making, but I will make odd recording now and then, so today two visual pieces that come from long term project about Sufi traditions I have been doing in recent years.

First video is a night session in Shah Jamal grave in Lahore, Pakistan, where dervishes high on music and hashish get crazy to drum rhythms by famous Sain brothers.

The form of expression for fakirs and dervishes from radical, “drunken” sects in Pakistan is a trance called dhamal. There is a lot to say about it, but as all mystical experiences, not only of Sufi tradition, it transcends words, what is the core experience is not only unspoken of, out of fear of persecution, but perhaps unspeakable. This is why they dance. They dance in abandonment of their own ego, leaving self, this bondage of historical moment, unifying with the saints that lived long ago, but in another sense are always present, and ultimately, unifying with divine. As travelers on the spiritual path to God seeking ‘unio mystica’, trance is for them crossing a threshold between this world and the next, and thus a ritual of transcendence.

More from Pakistan : http://blog.swiatoslaw.com/?cat=166 . For more on dhamal see : Rune Selsing, Dhamāl and the Performing Body: Trance Dance

***

To rest we move now to Kolkata, India, where on another graveyard Debasish Sen sings glory to Data Baba, 19th century saint. Here in Bengal Sufism, tantric traditions, Buddhism, everything is mixed in wonderful way, and saints are loved for who they are, and not for their affiliation to “our” sect or religion.

The term pagan is from the Latin paganus, an adjective originally meaning “rural“, “rustic”, or “of the country.” As a noun, paganus was used to mean “country dweller, villager.” In their origins, these usages derived from pagus, “province, countryside”, cognate to Greek πάγος “rocky hill”, and, even earlier, “something stuck in the ground”, as a landmark: the Proto-Indo-European root *pag- means “fixed” and is also the source of the words page, pale (stake), and pole, as well as pact and peace.

***
