Đurđevdan, festival that marks return of spring, victory of light over darkness, celebrated especially in Balkans, by the gypsies. Whether in Christian or Muslim context, it is deeply rooted in pagan past and the rhythm of nature.

The celebration in honor of Saint George, djurdjevdan (herdelezi), is one of the most important holidays for the Roma in the Southern Balkans area. It is one of the rare holidays to be celebrated by both Muslim and Christian Orthodox Roma. St. George, mostly portrayed as “virtuous knight” fighting a dragon, is – among others – the patron saint of soldiers, smiths, travelers, and artists, and one of the most important saints (Great Martyr) of the Eastern Church. Particularly the Serbian-orthodox Roma consider him as their patron saint. In the Orthodox church year, Djurdjevdan (George’s Day) falls on the 6th of May, but the festivities begin one day earlier. The Muslim counterpart to the Orthodox George’s Day – herdelezi – comes from the Turk name hıdrelez, which is a blending of hızır and Eliaz. According to legend, a meeting between the popular patron saint hızır (Arabian: el khadr – “the green one”) and the prophet Elijah in the 9th century was at the origin of this once very popular Turkish spring celebration.

Đurđevdan , festiwal który wyznacza powrót wiosny, zwycięstwo światła nad ciemnością, celebrowany szczególnie na Bałkanach, przez Cyganów. Czy to w chrześcijańskim, czy muzułmańskim kontekście, jest głeboko zakorzeniony w pogańskiej przeszłości i w rytmie natury.

Obchodzony ku czci świętego Jerzego, Đurđevdan ( herdelezi ), jest jednym z najważniejszych świąt dla Romów z południowych Bałkan. Jest jednym z tych rzadkich festiwali, które celebrowane są zarówno przez muzułmańskich jak i chrześcijańskich Cyganów. Święty Jerzy, zwykle portretowany jako zwycięski rycerz walczący ze smokiem ( w pogańskiej tradycji reprezentującym chtoniczne siły, związane z ciemnością i zimą ) – jest między innymi patronem żołnierzy, kowali, podróżników i artystów, i jednym z najważniejszych świętych wschodniego kościoła prawosławnego. Szczególnie serbscy prawosławni Romowie uważają go za swojego świętego patrona. W kościele prawosławnym, Đurđevdan ( dzień św. Jerzego ) przypada dopiero 6 maja, ale uroczystości zaczynają się dzień wcześniej. Muzułmański odpowiednik tego festiwalu to herdelezi – nazwa pochodzi z tureckiego słowa hıdrelez , które jest zbitką hızır i Eliaz. Zgodnie z legendą, spotkanie między popularnym świętym hızır ( arabskie el khadr – “Zielony” ) i prorokiem Eliaszem dało początek temu bardzo popularnemu kiedyś tureckiemu świętu.
