Before leaving Rio Branco to spend my final days in Brasil in Colonia 5000, despite warnings, I go to visit Alto Santo, original Santo Daime community, where it all started, and where now widow of Mestre Ireneu lives, near his grave. I hear from various sources that they are quite closed community, but I am not prepared to what extent. The original church is also a museum, but when I ask about possibility of visiting, or perhaps photographing dona Peregrina, a man working on the grounds explains, while escorting me outside, that this is “not for public”. Museum not for public, people who judge me based on my looks and interrupt in the middle of my short explanation about coming here half way across the world, only to learn about Santo Daime… It is a lesson of patience, but while I photograph beautiful tombstone of the Master, I am once again reminded how easy it is for people to become rigid and religion to become excuse for lavish marble constructions…

Zanim opuszczę Rio Branco aby spędzić ostatnie dni w Brazylii w Colonia 5000, pomimo ostrzeżeń, jadę odwiedzić Alto Santo, pierwszą osadę Santo Daime, tam gdzie wszystko się zaczęło, i gdzie mieszka obecnie wdowa po Mestre Ireneu, niedaleko jego grobu. Słyszę z różnych źródeł, że to bardzo zamknięta wspólnota, ale nie byłem przygotowany na to, w jakim stopniu. Pierwszy kościół jest także muzeum ale kiedy próbuję zapytać o możliwość odwiedzenia, lub też ewentualnego sportretowania pani Peregriny, mężczyzna pracujący na ich terenie tłumaczy, odprowadzając mnie poza płot, że to nie jest miejsce dostępne publicznie. Muzeum nie dla publiki, ludzie którzy oceniają mnie na podstawie wyglądu, i przerywają w połowie króciutkiego tłumaczenia po co tutaj przyjechałem z drugiego końca świata… To lekcja cierpliwości, ale kiedy fotografuję jedyne dostępne miejsce, piekny grobowiec Mistrza, po raz kolejny przypominam sobie jak łatwo ludzie sztywnieją a religia staje się pretekstem do stawiania luksusowych konstrukcji z marmuru…
Back to a place where there is still adventure and religious symbols are signposts for life and not monuments of heritage.
