living between worlds teaches you things. sometimes scary. / podróżowanie pozwala zrozumieć, czasami.

During my last journey, looking for ayahuasca shamans and drinking with them, perhaps 30-40 times during last 3 months, there were some moments, some short moments, but of frozen time, when I was feeling like between worlds, between states of being, in transition, and that feeling was wonderful. States of sleep, dream, waking life, ayahuasca vision, all they started to merge, intermingle, lend to each other their qualities, their light and colour.

I remember I was walking a jungle path and I had that feeling, more feeling than actual sensation of seeing, that something that most likely was sun reflecting in the puddle shone with weird white quality, this bright light I sometimes see in things, in faces, in white elements in my ayahuasca journeys, and I was not so sure where I actually was. I mean I knew I was walking that path, my conscious mind was making sure I woud not go crazy and made sure I knew but that was not all, part of me was dreaming.

During those 3 months I learned to cherish transition, falling asleep, waking, falling into vision, from the vision into sleep, landing from the vision into … what? why would that question matter, what matters is what I could learn, how flexible I could become with realities and what treasure bring from one into another. But what about telling about it, how can I describe these exercises and how they influence me, to those who choose not to participate?

No właśnie, w co? Dlaczego to pytanie miałoby mieć znaczenie?

I am about to start another chapter of the ayahuasca story, tell the events of last 3 months in South America and I feel less and less sure how to do it. I can postpone it for while, with perfect excuse of not all images developed and even less scanned yet, but then a time comes to translate a long and twisted dream into words and selection of pictures.

Can that be done?  On one hand, this is what I have been doing for most of recent years, translating from one language to another, one world to another, from one culture to another. But maybe I should drop illusion I actually did any of this, I should warn you not to trust any of those tales and translations, and to stress one more time, you have been hearing echo of an echo of a distant voice on the edge of the mountains, from depths of the forest, you saw a frozen reflection, a whisper about a glitter in the corner of my eye, shining surface of something, not sure from which reality, which state of being. Perhaps the words below best describe my feeling about this.

While it may seem arrogant to use a quote from such a man, it is not about a man, but about a ocean :

“I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”

( Isaac Newton )

One more peek into the “far away” land of Huaorani tribe. This time according to the rules.

Lightning stroke. Very close, very loud.  The only child which started to cry, first time during our stay here, is handicapped, fat daughter of Penti, one of Huaorani leaders.

I am in my hammock and I keep thinking, about all those spoilt, shrieking kids in trains, malls and streets of Europe, I keep thinking about calm of people here in the jungle, about irritation and frustration that await me when I come back home. Perhaps it means that backhome most of those brats, treated as little kings and fed with junk food, they are handicapped as Penti’s daughter?

Or perhaps we all, with spines deformed from hours of office slavery, overweight, shortsighted, stressed out, depressed, unbalanced, we are handicapped, as compared to whom we could have been.  Changes, of course, are possible. It is since a few years that I have begun to live my life consciously, abandoning hard drugs of pharma industry, leaving behind me industrial meat and alcohol, and my hang overs, hard shit, winter flu, bad moods were gone, and strange lightness of being came to me more and more often. But still, when I come back to mother Europe, in the farts generated from processed foods, in the bullshit of TV commercials, in the trance of shopping malls, in flood of plastic, I feel something stinks, and that smell spreads all over the world.

On the day of our arrival to Bameno, loaded boat comes with goods for the “tribals”, plastic toys, junk food, and with them, a doctor, vaccines and drugs. At the same time reason and pill for the new diseases. Christmas gifts from fat Americans, fanatical protestants, who, like stubborn red ants try to crawl with their mission in every corner of tropical forest, from Papua New Guinea, to the most remote settlements of Amazon. The more obscure and isolated location, the better it is, as they haven’t heard of Jesus and his gifts here yet. The mechanism is exactly the same I have seen in the tribal hills of eastern Bangladesh  (  http://blog.swiatoslaw.com/?p=765  ), Jesus is the white guy with gadgets and sweet stuff, so it makes sense to be his pal, and to tell to these funny sweating pink visitors whatever they want to hear.

after they

February 23rd, 2014

Jimmy Nelson, author of “beforethey.com” project is a talented, well financed and well equipped performer of this characteristic genre of colonial photography where noble savage proudly looks, once towards the strange box of glass plate camera, and now fancy digital equipment, and we look from other side into our dreams, ideas, visions of lost innocence, belief that paradise lost is still somewhere out there.

The thing is, it probably never existed. All that exists is life, in ever changing form, and by some strange twist of fate, for last 200 years it has been watched by a spectator, tourist. Be it retired German in funny Hawaiian shirt or middle aged brave “adventure” photographer Jimmy Nelson, still both are tourists. They come to see what they expected, what they heard is out there, from those who went before.  But life doesn’t like to freeze like it pretends to when shutter is released, in the right moment, right frame, avoiding including what spoils the narrative.

So if they, the tourists, are still naive, they are disappointed, and if they are smart, and know how to play the game, they join, or co-create the theatre.

I know, from my experience of years of visiting indigneous communities around the world, that “beforethey.com” is most of all expensive romantic theatre and this is why it became so popular. Does anyone still has any doubts that succesful and interesting photography doesn’t seek to represent “objective” reality?
Neither Huaorani Indians watching in their village fake American wrestling on satellite TV, nor the lovers of primitive buying Jimmy Nelson’s book are interested in reality and truth. Myth is way cooler. But for fucks sake, I am the last to tell myth from reality.

Therefore I will just show you some frames of the people and daily life in the village of Bameno in the Yasuni national park in Ecuador. In my opinion, these images present definitely “after”, in this funny occidental linear way of seeing things, and something Jimmy Nelson “forgot” to include in his fairy tale ( http://www.beforethey.com/tribe/huaorani )

Pokażę zatem jedynie kilka klatek przedstawiających ludzi i codzienne życie w wiosce Bameno w parku narodowym Yasuni, tej samej w której powstały zdjęcia Nelsona. Moim zdaniem te zdjęcia to zdecydowanie “po” , w tej zabawnej, okcydentalnej linearnej manierze postrzegania czasu, i pokazują one coś, co Jimmy Nelson “zapomniał” włączyć do swojej baśni ( http://www.beforethey.com/tribe/huaorani )

Having said all of the above, I must add I understand value of theatre. In this case, apart from just enriching the world with another way of being, playing that game is a source of revenue for Huaorani who, still knowing their forest, could serve as its rangers, guardians of what is left of one of most biodiverse places on earth, currently threatened by petrol extraction plans of government of Ecuador, and ultimately, by our greed. So even if we come to watch expensive theatre, that theatre is real , as real as tarmac road, oil pollution and supermarkets will be. As we fight invasion of commercial flood of banks and malls in  hearts of our cities, and understand it is good to leave some of public space for things such as art, so perhaps we should leave ourselves – and the Huarani – the luxury of performing that theatre of theirs.

Near Tena in the Amazon of Ecuador Juan de la Cruz, good guy and a shaman (who will soon be presented here in my ayahuasceros guide) organized a gathering of elders who are involved in the movement called Abuelos y Abuelas de Planeta, a movement that aims to bring together various indigenous spiritual traditions of the world, especially of Latin America, to connect spirits of the north – Eagle and those of the south – Condor, to bring together sages from the mountains, desert and jungle, shamans, spiritual guides, medicine men, so that they can interact in gathering held in sacred places, to learn from each other, to pass the knowledge to new generation. These are a few shots from pre-gathering in preparation for main meeting of this year, a sacred circle which is going to happen in Guatemala in September. More images will soon be linked on my Facebook site. ( https://www.facebook.com/swiato.slav )

“Hidrelez”, sufi version of Ederlezi. The Green Man, al Khidr is associated with the Water of Life. Since he drank the water of immortality he is described as the one who has found the source of life, ‘the Eternal Youth.’ He is the mysterious guide and immortal saint in popular Islamic lore and the hidden initiator of those who walk the mystical path.
