Once a year on the banks of Hoogly, in Kolkata, near Babu Ghat, hundreds, sometime thousands of sadhus gather before Ganga Sangar mela, very special festival happening where Ganges finally comes into the ocean after its long journey across India. The sadhus congregate first in Kolkata, arriving from all over  the country, and camp for a week, doing what they normally do on such gatherings. Despite what it seems, sadhus’ life is not an easy path, requires abandoning of all possesions, all family and relatives, and from now on hard rock is your pillow. But the fact that gathering like this is happening in the heart of agglomeration populated by several million people surely draws curious spectators. Many of them have neither time nor money to travel to Ganga Sangar, so here they can get taste of mela’s mood.

Something to write home about. India, especially big cities, is in transition into modern society that sometimes starts to see its own traditions as tourist attraction, curiosity, without understanding of hidden meaning, without even trying. Welcome to the world of “look what amused me today”. But sadhus play along, hoping for small donation or just enjoying being in the centre of attention.
