hitchhiking / autostop

September 9th, 2013

In my travels and photography religions are quite prominent topic, so I am often asked which is “mine”, both by people I photograph and people who see those stories. There is great surprise to the answer – none. One American girl, who turned Muslim, as many neophytes, burning with devotion for her faith was almost angry at the fact, how can I not become Muslim after spending so much time with the Sufis.

There is one very useful metaphor, connected to Buddhist tradition, if I remember well, of religion and spiritual practices being a kind of a boat, that is supposed to take us to the Other Shore, call it a Shore of Understanding, Realization, whatever. It is very beautiful and pragmatic, reminds what is most important, not to fall in love with the boat itself, not to spend time advertising it as the best, or even worst, the Only One, instead of how to reach that shore. To me it is also useful as my way of gaining understanding happened to be by movement.

But even if many times I loose patience, I know, at least now, I am a hitchhiker.
