It is perhaps one of many paradoxes of psychedelic use, that what conservative majority within our societies considers as drug escapism into hedonism, and away from duties and commitments of the world, can often lead – and it has led in my experience, to quite conservative view of life and values. It is not angry fanaticism however, rather is accompanied by acceptance of other paths and options – while pursuing simplified, quieter version of previous, greedy life. In my case, a trade off from solitary adventures, devouring the world in form of exotic, extravagant adventure and millions of pixels accumulated in my memory and camera, being everywhere, and wanting ever more, and yet not fulfilled, now left behind and exchanged for simplicity of family life, modest nest, in very rustic conditions of a backward middle-of-nowhere corner of Amazon forest.

I would lie if I said that looking through years worth of accumulation of stories and photos on this blog does not evoke some kind of nostalgia for the road, other lands where grass is if not greener, at least different. But one enduring lesson from the vine of death, even if at times we try to suppress it, is about mortality. I see clearly that greed of the world, no matter whether consumed in form of material goods or experiences, is a manifestation of underlying deeper anxiety about inevitable end of it all being quite near. The solution, again and again life shows to us, is never forward, faster, more, but actually less. We can not have all the women of the world, all the money, all alternative career paths. We may as well learn as soon as possible, that it applies to all aspect of life, and just we find happiness with that particular person, so let’s try to find peace in that particular place, ability and flaw we are given. Surrender, hardest of victories, to be gained daily, isn’t that the teaching of Christ refusing temptation of the world in his 40 days retreat to the desert?

To me, it does not mean that the world is evil, and that Satan is its owner, it means that unreined desire for it is hell in itself.

Faerie land

July 2nd, 2019

Another way to access the world of the Fae was to find a secret entrance. These were typically guarded, but every once in a while an enterprising adventurer would find his way in. Often, he found upon leaving that more time had passed than he expected. In several tales, mortals who spend a day in the fairy realm find that seven years have passed in their own world.

That gate is within, and yet, it opens magic doors everywhere in This reality.

anywhere on this road

December 25th, 2018

I live in this country now
I’m called by this name
I speak this language
It’s not quite the same
For no other reason
Than this it’s my home
And the places I used to be far from are gone
You’ve travelled this long
You just have to go on
Don’t even look back to see
How far you’ve come
Though your body is bending
Under the load
There is nowhere to stop
Anywhere on this road

(…)

I love this hour

When the tide is just turning
There will be an end
To the longing and yearning
If I can stand up
To angels and men
I’ll never get swallowed
In darkness again

Recent years brought a lot of hard lessons about nature of healing as something that can not be forced, no matter how hard we would like to try. First the death of my mother after many years of deterioration due to brain cancer, but mostly subsequent chemo and radiotherapy. Seeing her in bed, in such a long agony, fed by a tube, injections, bedsores. Constantly battling with the meaning of life, worth of such life, ultimate questions.

Then, after a short happy break came the disaster with my brother, cruel irony of the fate, that the person dearest to me, whom I care most about, was brought into tragic circumstances because of the Amazonian medicine, which had never even had opportunity to try. The same medicine that could have brought him more peace and equilibrium caused trouble and sadness. My wanting to do good resulted in bad, but things are never black and white.

The very same disaster that set me apart from my brother, brought me closer to my father than ever before in our lifes. The realization that he may never see me again was what finally lifted him from his deep depression, caused by years of negative attitude towards others, world, and as a natural consequence, towards himself. He kept casting on himself for years this negative spell, not only with actions of unhealthy lifestyle, but also by literally spelling it out : “life has no purpose”, “it’s over”, “i lost it”. The efforts to bring him into “now” were all in vain, and for his stubborn character no amount of “come on” would work. Only the opposite, “you can’t”.

So when he could not, he came. He came first time in his life, to Peru, to Amazon jungle, him who always scorned those exotic cultures, him who hated the heat. We spent great year together, and it brought enthusiasm into his life..It brought some hope, a least sparks. There was still a lot of self pity, a lot of negativity but I knew the burden of a lifetime can not be cleared in a month. On top of that, because of his health condition and weak heart, as well as our family history with ayahuasca, I was again faced with difficult choice, and were not able to use the most powerful tool we have for lifting such depression. All we could do during this short stay, and a year later, during 6 months of second visit, was to introduce him to healthier living, to all the things he scorned for so many years, with the favourite saying “what is the difference if I die sick or healthy”. So during this time he quit alcohol and cigarettes, was eating well, spending a lot of time outdoors. We tried to show him the best we could of Peru, the jungle, ocean, mountains.

It was not too late to rebuild the bond we probably never had since childhood. Every day and every now was worth trying. But it turned out, it was too late for this change to undo so many years of the opposite, of anger, resentment, frustration on spiritual level, and unhealthy habits on physical level.

The plants are powerful tools. Traditional medicine can do wonders. But applied in a right time, and with cooperation, strong will and intention of the patient. So when the snake bit, it was too late, too hard. The snake in form of cancer. Things went quickly. We tried many things, consulting with many healers, both traditional, from different fields, as well as oncologists. But things went quickly.

Każdy dzień i każde teraz było warte próbowania, i jeżeli czegokolwiek żałuję, to każdego podniesienia głosu, każdej nawet drobnej utraty cierpliwości.

The gift of my mothers suffering turned out to be a lesson in yet another sense i did not expect before. Seeing her long agony helped me understand that it is good that all went quickly this time. It is good suffering was short and less, even if that is so relative, I thought, when I saw my father take for granted or complain about things so many others would be grateful for.

He went back to Poland on the 21st of February. We were able to reconcile, to say our good byes, I knew that deep inside he knew he is coming exactly for that. After his return home, he saw his second son he had been missing. He was still unable to tell these things, years of emotional blockage also can not be undone in last moment, but he was able to show. Then pneumonia set in and other complications. Exactly one month later, today, on the first day of spring, on the first day of new astrological year, when the great cycle of life turns again, his last breath was gone and he was spared further suffering.

Wrócił do Polski 21 lutego. Mieliśmy czas by się pogodzić, pożegnać. Potem zaatakowało zapalenie płuc i inne komplikacje. Dokładnie miesiąc po powrocie, dzisiaj, pierwszego dnia wiosny, pierwszego dnia nowego astrologicznego roku, kiedy wielki cykl życia znów się obraca, jego ostatni oddech uszedł i oszczędzone mu zostało dalsze cierpienie.

I give thanks for that. But not only, I also give thanks for the greatest gift he left behind, even if until the last moment, I am still not sure, he was conscious of it. When I posted here on this blog last time, it was exactly four months ago. We didn’t know yet about his cancer. My brothers charges were being dropped, we spoke again, the storm was almost over. I wrote then a quote from one of my favourite dub songs :

“I give tanx for life. Never will I be ungrateful. I give tanx for life.  Even if my days are dreadful”

I also wrote, taught by the hardships of those many preceding months, that the answer is not in the joy when things are going smooth, like then, on the beach, with family happy, but in remembering, etching out these words in the bottom of the soul, remembering when the things are hardest. This is the unconquered joy in tears, joy in prisons, joy in despair, joy that overcomes death.

Nawet jeśli me dni są koszmarem”

This the joy that was so hard to access for my father. This the joy that arises only from patient acts of gratefulness, day by day, moment by moment, the joy that seems to be out of reach of most of us, at most times. This is the state of being that, obviously was out of my reach for so many years. It is obvious we inherit life attitudes, growing together with others we take them by osmosis, from society, from friends, but most of all from closest family. I never was able to discover, but was very interested, where this cycle started, for us, also for my tribe. Who was the first who was hurt so much, that started the curse of generations, passing on frustration, anger, unfullfillment, desperate reaching out for love, defense mechanism of alcohol, the drugs? In the end I gave up looking for that answer and I think it changes very little. I found the answer in now, NOW without guilt, without reasoning, without trying to sort out the past. I first found it intellectually, on my spiritual search, but that was not enough. This enormous thirst can not be quenched by words, by concepts, only by feeling and by experience. That experience was provided to me first by contact with certain societies of joy, and then by the plants, and I will never stop singing praise to them, despite the legal situation, despite my persecution. I hope I will also never forget the lesson left by my father.

Kto i kiedy został tak pierwszy skrzywdzony, iż uruchomiło to klątwę pokoleń, przekazywania frustracji, gniewu, niespełnienia, desperackich prób wymuszania miłości, obronnych mechanizmów alkoholu, narkotyków?

It is lesson by negative inspiration. For some it may be controversial thing to write on the day of his death, but I am only interested in truth, truth as liberation. We have different destinies and different ways of teaching those who choose to listen everywhere and carefully. My father had many great qualities, and we can tell story from different angles. Shamanism, Amazonian as well, teaches there is no separate good and bad, there is one reality. The most beneficial medicines can be poisons, the most powerful healing trees bring also the dark power, shitana. Perhaps the greatest masculine quality present in our family, and inherited probably along the long line, ( I can only reach as far as my grandfather ) is the extreme stubborness or perseverance. This is perfect example of the ambiguity of the world I mention above. This stubborness is what I believe helped my brother survive in jail, this stubborness is what brought me where I am, very far along rarely trodden paths, but this stubborness was also what killed my father.

Because when energy is employed for wrong intention, its effects can be devastating. When one declares he does not want to live, he does not enjoy this and this and this, he does not enjoy life, then with such energy behind , that wish will be granted and unwanted gift of life taken away. There is an old Sufi saying, that we are like guests of God at the banquet of life, and we can expect to be served, but have no right to demand. My father demanded and tried to force his way for so many years, and he was not alone in this, this is what masses of unhappy souls do every day, and in many cases a lifetime is not enough to understand that happiness is not achieved by force, by demanding, but by letting go. So after my dad grew tired and weak – and for a strong character like his it took long time – he started complaining. That is other side of the same coin, frustration and anger, they alternate and create misery again and again, for oneself and for others.

To lekcja poprzez negatywną inspirację.

Our task is not to repeat this cycle. This is where I am trying to explain how my father’s life is a gift for us. It is by the power of opposites, by the eternal laws of action and reaction, where the careful and aware can learn. It is by the very strength of this tragedy that it can be seen so clearly, and so the lesson can be learned best. It is by gift of being almost every day with him for past 6 months, ( so rare these days, for people my age, with broken families being norm rather exception ), that I was able to observe him in me and me in him, was able to see my qualities, my character, so sharp it sometimes hurt. I was able to catch myself again and again on similar thought and action patterns, same kind of criciticsm, impatience and even if a lot milder now, there is not much to stop them from growing into the same disease that consumed my father. They say in the Amazon that for becoming brujo, black sorcerer, one must not do much, just let it happen, it is the purification of healer that requires constant work, effort, and remembering.

So my prayer on the departure of my father is for his spirit to keep reminding me. When in my early childhood I was devasted by death of my grandfather, I woved to stay honest man as he was. This time I summon my father stubborness and my mother’s direction / intention to be always focused on the good things in life, because it is then that they abound. My abundance already is beyond measure. The quest now is to share it, in any way I know, be it by telling story or by sharing the gift of the medicines, which open path of liberation. This path is to be trodden by each and every one, we can support each other, and we may fall again and again, but for fucks sake, don’t wait until it is too late. Don’t wait a single day. Be happy today.

Instead of condolences towards me, find one less thing to complain about. I have a good purge today, tears and further unblocking of the heart. I know how to make this story meaningful, inshallah, if the Writer allows it. Be a part of the tale of gratitude wherever we are.

This is a liberation day, his task is over. Ours not.

Zamiast wysyłania mi kondolencji, znajdźcie choć jeden powód do narzekania jaki warto wypierdolić. Miałem dziś dobre oczyszczenie, dużo łez i dalsze odblokowanie serca.

the tides are turning

“I give tanx for life. Never will I be ungrateful.

I give tanx for life.  Even if my days are dreadful”

When the clouds come, there may be a time when it feels like you have nothing to share, that you can’t pour from an empty vessel. It ain’t never empty though, hard times also pass, patience pays off, and even when I don’t feel it, I chant the hardship away, like my mother did, like all the shamans do, it is that simple, keep on chanting. Zikr, remembering, when things are hardest, until time comes when one feels IT again.

Celebrate life, yo. You know what <3 is the solution.

( Fragment z “Zagrożenia i potencjał terapeutyczny transferu kulturowego ayahuaski”, autorstwa założyciela Centrum Takiwasi, dr Jacques Mabit, tłumaczenie Światosław Wojtkowiak )

Opowiada on poszukiwaniu wolności po omacku.

I jesteś całkowicie wolny.

I odwrotnie.

here and nostalgia / tu i wtedy

How to reconcile this bloody BEHERENOW propaganda with embedded Slavic nostalgia? Even in most colourful NOW, the distant foggy THEN calls back like a devilish siren song…

toil of the land / trud ziemi

August 10th, 2017

How upside down our world is, I think, when I look at the cassava we planted more than half a year ago. How much sweat, how many rains, how many days, how many weeds. To nourish our bodies months after with the most basic ingredients, to sustain life, with such an effort. And yet, the countless farmers of the world, those who without machines, without chemicals tend to yam in African jungles, rice in plains of Bangladesh, potatoes in the Andes, they are the lowest rungs in the ranks of our modern civilization, next to beggars, hardly able to pay their children school fees with their heroic struggle. Not for them gap year trips, not for them wondering about self-improvement, weekend yoga classes, paintball clashes.

We are on half starving diet for only two weeks, to practice our patience, to communicate better with plants we work with, to step back from daily trance. But that austerity is not far removed from so many men daily diet, daily life, daily trance. When weak, hungry and thirsty I sing in the night of ceremony, images of countless generations praying for daily bread, for drop of rain, for mercy become reality for a short moment. I am humble and humiliated at the same time, both because of my temporary state and because of shame that so often I take for granted the fact that it is only temporary. Any amount of “gracias” that night will rung fake if I fail to remember tomorrow. And yet, by every thought, by every song, by every step, I must believe, we may be transformed.

Robimy to by lepiej zrozumieć rośliny z jakimi pracujemy, ćwiczyć cierpliwość, wykroczyć poza codzienny trans. A jednak, poprzez każdą myśl, każdą pieśń, każdy krok, muszę wierzyć, możemy dokonać transformacji.

żywy ogień / fire

„Przeszłość i przyszłość zasłaniają nam Boga; spal je obie żywym ogniem”

“Past and future conceal God from us, burn them both with live fire”

Give thanks to the turns of merciless fortune, for every change always brings bad and good, calamity and redemption. There are many threads to this story, but being exiled as so many generations before, finally brought the rich flavour of nostalgia that is essential component of Slavic soul. The meaning of things only revealed when lost, we are the men of the willow and birch, forest, rivers and swamps, country living and simplicity, but I have lost it twice, first with all the others, under deluge of uniform ugliness of modernity, second time by ruling of personal fate. I see it now where others can’t.

Dzięki niech będą nieuchronnie obracającemu kołu fortuny, bo każda zmiana zawsze przynosi dobre i złe, nieszczęście i odkupienie.
