This peaceful fishing village near Chittagong on the Bay of Bengal coast of Bangladesh is about to celebrate festival dedicated to Mother Ganga, the female spirit of the river, giver of life. They are surrounded by sea of Islam, but no one bothers them. The coexistence is possible, as it was for centuries in all corners of South Asia where Sufi vagabond preachers mingled with priests of ancient Indoeuropean traditions, when tribal shamanic beliefs were present near the message of the People of the Book. We are now years after the Partition, after cruel wars, ethnic cleansing but still Muslim pilgrims attend Hindu melas, sadhus come to sit with Sufi mystics in their shrines, ordinary people take blessing from the holy men and worship nearby river or mountain , regardless of their religious affiliation , just using different cultural costume. Yes, they can  always be manipulated into hatred and riots, so many times they have been, it is not such new thing. It is sad to see enclaves like this disappearing, to see last Hindu communities evicted from Pakistan, to see Sufi fakirs beaten by the frustrated orthodox mob, to see adivasi brainwashed by Hindu clergy all over India. But as long as there are people aware of the unity that is hidden beyond names, there is hope.
