Meanwhile, across Indian subcontinent, far away from naked sadhus smoking their chillums, a religious festival takes more bloody form. In Lahore, Pakistan, Ashura mood is tense, in anticipation of bomb attack. That day is often marked by sectarian violence. News just came from Kabul where a suicide attack killed 63 people and critically wounded 160 gathered at a shrine for Ashura observation. In Pakistan too every year something happens. Will it be here, or Karachi perhaps? Bloody roulette, bloody backs, bloody shirts. Ashura for the Shia is a day of mourning of death of grandson of Muhammad, Husayn ibn Ali, who was killed in battle of Karbala, 680 AD. Unfortunately, every year there are fresh victims to mourn.
Obchody święta Ashura. Lahore, Pakistan, grudzień 2011. Właśnie dotarły wiadomości z Kabulu, w zamachu bombowym na szyitów zgromadzonych aby uczcić ten dzień zginęło ponad 60 osób. Tak jest każdego roku, tutaj w Pakistanie również. Czy tym razem padnie na Lahore, a może Karaczi? Tego dnia szyici opłakują śmierć wnuka proroka, zabitego w bitwie pod Karbalą w 680 roku naszego kalendarza, a 61 roku od hidżry. Ich żal, łzy, krew przelewana w samoumartwieniu są bardzo autentyczne, jak gdyby ktoś zginął wczoraj, nie wieki temu. Ale całkiem możliwe że po tym dniu będą znów kolejne ofiary, kolejne powody do płaczu.
