cracked mind

October 31st, 2020

Mind fails and words fail. Affected by jungle, by plants, decomposing, transforming does not necessarily mean nootropic boost of more of the same, but sometimes rather painful process of destruction of personality, of ego that was a source of its own pride, maker of its own trap. Ego death does not necessarily mean sudden event in ceremony, but can be gradual letting go of everything that was seen as a treasure before. One can only hope to trust the others who have gone before, that only after letting go of one thing, another can be revealed, and behind cracked mind, waits hidden more of the feeling. When more of concepts and theories simply do not enter, or slide right away, and no effort can stop that, love remains the only solution.

“highest inna di kingdom trees balancing over we.

humble within wrong is good spirit.

that is good spirit”

Often when I look at this king of trees towering above our horizon, I recall the song by Midnite, ¨Kingdom Trees¨. A lot of rasta metaphors are about plant world, and it was through rastafarianism I started my spiritual explorations outside of Europe. This syncretic mysticism, especially its ¨roots¨organic form, grounded in basic of nature, helped form part, to use again rasta figure, of my foundation, and until today remains a source of in-spiration, even if other plants now are fuel for my reasoning.

So to the roots I bow and today pay the homage for wise person that has just passed, Vaughn Benjamin, lead singer of Midnite.

Within being wronged, I found my home, in the shade of highest of trees. Now the tough part, while abundance and strength rises, to stay humble.

riding the broom

Art of healing can be compared to art of carving, in this aspect of removal of excess as a way to reveal hidden beauty. It is not so much by adding something – like a magic pill that makes you full – but by getting rid, purging, removing obstacles that block one from understanding and his body from healthy growth and flourishing, we are allowing patient ( the one who is patient ) to heal.

We are talking of course about so called “alternative” or holistic healing, not paradigm of broken machine, that cares not much what made it broken. This holistic approach does not simply respect spirituality, as some helpful gimmick for aiding proper, biological course of treatment with improvements in psychological well being. Here, spirituality is essential, and what we are personally interested in, is not superficial layer, which god you worship or what colour of robes put on, but what is under the Mask, and what is in common. So if you look at actual practice of many serious spiritual traditions, you will see that activity of cleansing of physical environment is very common one. It may be symbolic, like sage or palo santo smoke to ward negative energies, but very often it is literal, as first step given to apprentice, here is your broom. Remember that quote from Terence Mc Kenna, comparing psychedelics and eastern traditions with their meditation, when admitting his lack of patience, he said that you can either spend 15 years sweeping floor of ashram to get a glimpse of something, or just take psychedelics. Well, maybe that is where his main mistake lied, and why he never was able to connect deeper with Amazonian shamanism with its discipline, but chose rather to experiment with his DMT pipe and mushroom megadoses, blazing trails for legions of current psychonauts, who often also have trouble with sweeping their filthy yard, but no trouble at all breaking next boundary of high.

This example here is given, because grandpa Terence was one of great inspirations on my way, and so I feel entitled in a way to give this advice to fellow psychonauts. The idea of our project here, Psychonauta Foundation, is not to abandon exciting journey into one’s soul, but to furnish the voyager with tools and skills, in other words, give him foundation, so that the journey is more productive and one can bring something back to the port. Because after a while, it is being in the port that can become more difficult, and so I believe Mc Kenna was completely wrong in his quote :

“It’s not hard to sweep up around the ashram, but it’s hard to take psychedelics.”

It is opposite, tells you someone who really has been places. You may have encountered elves or angry Somalis, in this realm or another, but does really more and more continue to bring you more meaning? You might have understood this easily about consumerist society and money, when unhappy with it, you set for your psychedelic oddyssey, but can’t the same happen with unquenchable thirst for experience?

When you sweep the floor and enjoy not only the beauty created by act of cleaning, but act itself, as you enjoyed the ceremony last night, that made it filthy, you come closer to balance and peace with this world, that eventually has to be left behind. But I believe the access to eternity lies not in dreaming about its shape and form that is to come, but in firm grasp of your broomstick, now.

The Feast of Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ), also known as Corpus Domini, is a Latin Rite liturgical solemnity celebrating the tradition and belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ and his Real Presence in the Eucharist.  During this day, a chalice which used to represent Great Goddess is carried around in ritual procession and the gathered believe it contains the flesh of God.

Długie przejście to wiele bodźców, myśli, trochę potrwa by to wszystko uspokoić.

Today is Friday, after many months away I am back at Joel’s place. I left from Poland on Monday noon. The long journey with many stopovers is a result of my thrift mode, punk style of work and travel, partial response to the question how I do what I do, distaste for compromise and commercial prostitution, minimalism, ascetism, or perhaps just an excuse. Long transition means many stimuli, thoughts, it will take time to calm them down so saving may be illusionary. I have a plan to shelter in the woods, away from tits of Joel’s new gf, away from delicacies of Belen’s market, away from human buzz, human life. We set off into the forest, three hours march to the camp with all the gear I need to carry.

Dziś w nocy pierwsza ceremonia. Czekam. Dużo w mej minichatce zniosłem przedmiotów, rzeczy niby niezbędnych. Dużo myśli niby niezbędnych, nazbierałem je w ostatnie miesiące, te wszystkie bodźce, teraz się gotują. Zaczynam oczyszczanie, koncentrację, uspokojanie obaw, co ja będę robił całe dnie? Spotkanie z czasem płynącym jak powolna rzeka, spotkanie z samym sobą.

Saturday, 27.09. Tonight is the first ayahuasca ceremony. I am waiting. I have gathered a lot of stuff in my hut, things seeming to be necessary. A lot of indespensable thoughts, I have accumulated them in recent months, now all this rubbish is boiling. I begin purification, concentration, calming down of fears, “what will I be doing all days long?”. Meeting with time flowing slowly like jungle river, meeting with myself.

Daleko mi do cierpliwości budowniczych mandali.

I convert time into money, I convert time to meaning, I face eternal, obsessive question “is it worth it”, what is “worth”, will that be useful, whether learning/experience “here” will be of any use “out there”, outside. Absurd calculations of the anxious mind.

Sunday, 28.09. Non-action is hard. Cigarette, food take meaning as fulfillment of the void. Pen, paper, handmade calendar – reference to the world of meaning, to “out there” and “after”, to action justified, because after I have written something here, someone will read that later, “something” will come out of it. Always a hunger for purpose. I am far from the patience of mandalas’ builders.

If this piece of paper is escape from non-acting, from meditation, feeling and mindfulness, therefore script, as writing down of thoughts, is a translation of experience rather than experiencing itself, against it. This is a murderer of what Terence McKenna calls “felt presence of immediate experience”.

Zmieniają ptaki i insekty wokół. W nocy ptaki – komórki, swym piskiem jak alarm w telefonie poganiają do niewiadomo czego.

Pierwsza noc  z “medycyną” ( wczoraj ) to błąd i chaos.

So I am trying to be. Slow, precise moves. Taste of stepping down a thorn. Touch of a fly on my skin. Sound of giant leaf falling down. Planes passing high above the canopy, once can not see them, but they are heard. This is me in three weeks time, coming back to Lima, looking down at the jungle below, without a trace of man.

Light changes, with every hour change the sounds. Birds and insects change. In the night, birds-mobile phones, with their electronic alarm like shriek, they hasten me, god knows what for?

The first night with “medicine” ( yesterday ) was an error and chaos. Long waiting for that moment > anxiety > fear > blockage. Nervously I try to play my jew’s harps, a bit of rattling, nothing ever begins, vision lurks somewhere in the shadows of my head, signals that is around, but something is blocking it. Surplus of thoughts from last weeks, regrets, expectations, doubt? Impatience? After all, I have spent all that money, I have spent all that time… How many times I keep falling in the same trap, haven’t I learn anything? Remembering, forgetting, remembering.

I go to sleep, it is only 9 PM. In the night I am awoken by a pressure inside brain, vision keeps knocking, still unclear, but stronger, distressing, it knows that Joel is gone, I am left on my own with the power of Grandmother. There is a pressure below as well, so I find way that way, defecating instead of giving up in my psyche, it seems equivalent, but not enough apparently, as anxiety keeps coming back until the morning, in strange dreams, heavy thoughts.   Exhausting long sleep, 12 hours.

Poniedziałek 29.09. Po niedzieli a więc nieco działania. Eksperyment kulinarny, gotowanie aya z proszku, 3 saszetki, ayahuaska zmielona, chaliponga, chacruna. Inwestycja to niecałe 20 soli, oraz sporo uwagi i pracy. Drewno, woda, pilnowanie.

Monday, 29.09.  Action time. Culinary experiment, cooking aya from powder I bought in Belen, 3 plastic bags, one with powdered vine, one with chaliponga, one with chacruna. Investment is less than 20 soles and a lot of attention and work. Wood, water, fire, watching over.

Rano kolejny raz zjebany na amen zamek w torbie, errory autofokusa, takie małe rzeczy, a łatwo spychają w stronę frustracji i smutku. Jedyne wyjście to akceptacja, fatalizm.

Dietuje rosliny medyczne, to znaczy przyjmuje ich ducha. Przygotowuje je doświadczony w tym Joel. Wczoraj na sen wywar z remocaspi, dziś popołudniu wairacaspi. Nieznany cel, działanie, Joel pytany “po co”, niezmiennie odpowiada – by poznać “medycynę”.

Actually that is a great gift, something to do, “meaning” appears, a reason not to be rotting on my mattress. Vipassana without a lash, without instructor and companions seems to be extremely hard, from meditative state is very easy to slip into barren, fatiguing dream. Forest however, when I finally leave my bed, it requires constant attention, is full of potential danger. Insects – today morning we were squeezing huge worms from bodies of Joel’s dogs, nesting under skin, also human.  Yesterday I almost stepped on a huge snake on the riverbank. On one hand, not much is going on here, on the other – that is a big event – I might have saved in that moment my health or even life. So easy to take that for granted. In the morning a zipper in my bag fucked up for good again, errors of camera’s autofocus, those little things so easily push me towards frustration and sadness. Trip in lower parts of the valley continues, but under control. I know the only solution is acceptance, fatalism.

I am dieting medicinal plants, it means I ingest and work with their spirit. They are being prepared by Joel. Yesterday, before going to sleep, an infusion from remocaspi, today afternoon wairacaspi. Unknown purpose. When I ask Joel “what for”, he always replies – “to know the medicine”.

Czasem film akcji, a czasem Tarkowski.

Sun is moving forward on the sky, water in the pot with boling aya evaporates, some branches fell down from the tree. My thoughts still keep running backwards – Rainbow, Mongolia, Barbara – and forwards – “perhaps I should cancel my diet and visit Leticia in Colombia, at least couple of days”. Desire for action. It is nearly 11 AM, dogs have eaten, got rid of worms, so they sleep, it seems to be enough for them.

I notice important thing. Hardly anything changes objectively, outside of me, in the realm of things and events, during these last few days, and I already see a certain pattern – my mood changes constantly, dependent on thoughts, plans, hopes – not that what there is – and even more affected by small stimuli from what actually happens – for example the plant induced – like yerba mate I have drunk, mapacho I have smoked, food I have eaten, shit, bath. Vibrating process, reflected in the mirror of consciousness. Sometimes action movie, sometimes Tarkowski’s long take.

Z tym mapacho to ciekawa sprawa. Joel daje mi książkę o leczniczych roślinach, wydana z 70 lat temu w Buenos Aires, wydawnictwo Verdad Presente, jacyś ewangelicy, Jehowa dał nam roślinki dla zdrowia i natura wspaniała, a tymczasem na wstępie tytoń i alkohol jako największe zagrożenia, a by proces leczenia się udał, wstępny warunek – pacjent musi odstawić kawę, tytoń, mate, herbate, kakao …

That mapacho is interesting story. Joel gives me a book about medicinal plants, published some  70 years ago in Buenos Aires, publishing house is called Verdad Presente, some evengelists, so of course Jehova gave is plants and nature be praised, but in the introduction tobacco and alcohol are presented as greatest evil, and for the healing process to be succesful, patient must put aside coffee, tobacco, mate, tea, cocoa…

Tymczasem tutaj – tytoń chroni, “tabaquito protector”, w czasie ceremonii, w czasie gotowania, w czasie diety. Chroni przed czym?

Meanwhile here, the concept in Amazonian folk medicine is that tobacco protects, “tabaquito protector”, in the ceremony, during brewing, in the diet. Protects from what? Evil spirits, harm. Therefore, abused daily, “in the civilization”, tobacco may also be protection? It is a price to pay for life in stress, in hostile environment full of negative, jealous, agressive vibration – people – spirits – against whose influence we instinctively defend ourselves, by compulsive, habitual use of tobacco shield, the smoke that screens us from evil since time immemorial. Neither wolves nor demons of the forest like it.

Wtorek, 30.09. Nowe pomysły, skrócić dietę, odnaleźć gringo shamana, porobić zdjęćia, kontynuować przewodnik, scouting do przyszłorocznego filmu.
Wąż, na którego prawie nadepnąłem – strażnik lasu, nauczyciel pokory ale i mój najcenniejszy przewodnik.

Tuesday, 30.09. What was subtly suggested by intuition in Mongolia and found its way into my answers for MTV – “dream job? – guide / what is the obstacle? pride” – it slowly confirms itself. My pride makes me demand more, something special, makes me look everywhere around, instead of focusing on what I already have – a guide profession, understood in various ways, intermediary between worlds, it not only brings me bigger part of my loaf of bread, but is also simply fascinating, it allows me to be with people, to help them pass certain frontiers I have passed myself before, it allows me to make trips into nature, to which I do not fully belong and perhaps it is not time yet -  forest for example is really a different world, and it is one thing to be frequent guest here, another to live. My worlds are a bit different from worlds of local shaman, but we can complete each other well, this is exciting to know that, the snake is leading me again to interesting twist of fate. New ideas, I will shorten my diet, find gringo shaman, take photos, continue my guide project, as well as scouting for next year movie.
The snake I almost stepped upon – guardian of the forest, teacher of humbleness, but also my most precious guide.

godzina 10:00 Joela wciąż nie ma, kolejny dzień. Dziś chyba czas na samodzielne spotkanie z ayahuaską.
11:30 pierwszy strzał. Drumla, czekanie, nic.

10:00 AM Joel is still not here, another day on my own. I think today is a good time for private encounter with ayahuasca
11:30 first shot. Jew’s harp, waiting, nothing.
12:00 repeat, half cup.
15:30 a couple of half cups downed and nothing. Aya from powder sucks. I open now the bottle from Dutchman.
17:30 Joel is not back yet. But something starts to happen. Aya slides in. Amazing delay, it comes with fear, in falling darkness, self-feeding anxiety. At the same time I have lovely companion, my jew’s harp, it finally takes off after all these days, holy breath takes off, new sounds, perhaps aided too by dieta and hunger, my senses are heightened, I receive guiding sounds. My reading from recent hours – “Tengeri’, a novel full of Mongolian atrocities is fuelling dark trip. What a ride, it becomes dangerous, fear grows as darkness around.

Pisane nastepnego dnia :

Gwałtowny przestrach zwierzęcia przywołał mnie do rzeczywistości – potencjalny zabójca koło mego otwartego domku, koło moich butów, koło miejsca gdzie przed chwilą, w amoku, nie patrząc dookoła kucałem i srałem – to realne niebezpieczeństwo w miejsce pozbawionego podstaw, iluzorycznego strachu z wizji.

Written next day :

As sudden as the snake like appearing of the aya effect was its disappearance – after I cut in half a lemon and sucked its juice, disregarding diet’s rules – but most of all, after Joel’s dog, sitting near my leg, jumped in the air frightened, and below a trunk one metre away from me a red snake slid out. Sudden fright of the dog brought me instantly back to reality – potential killer near my hut without walls, while I am tripping, next to my shoes, near a place where minutes before, in ayahuasca haze, without looking around I went to squat and shit – this is real danger instead of illusionary fear of the visions. In a second priorities are set, vision extinguished and to the surface brought all the defence mechanism of the ego, and of physical structure of life. This is wonderful device and I believe that new age declarations about getting rid of ego are in practice like dreams about becoming a pant-shitting madman decaying in a ditch.

Some time later I muster courage and drink another portion, then lay down under my mosquito net, calmly breathing and waiting. Visions appear in form of slightly ayahuasca styled, unclear dreams, another tiring night but nothing great, nothing concrete. Morning however is awesome.

Środa, 01.10 Kolejny dzień bez Joela, chyba coś się stało. Gotowanie, jedzenie, książka, pranie. Myśli i postanowienia.

Wednesday, 01.10. Another day without Joel, something must have happened. Cooking, eating, book, washing. Thoughts and decisions. Tomorrow I finish the diet, this is not for me. Not my way of finding knowledge. I am intermediary, not gardener, herbsman. Not now, not at this stage, I will not stay alone in the woods for months, entering the plant world, this is a period in my life when I am still interested more in humans.

Zbyt długie leżenie – pasywność wpędzają w dziwne zaułki – pętle wizji – kiedy więc intuicja cichutko podpowiada – przemóż lenistwo, wstawaj, skorzystaj z okazji by poujeżdżać drumlę, weź łyka wody, mapacho, zmień pozycję, bądź aktywny – wówczas ja podążam. Słucham wewnętrznego przewodnika, tyle razy wcześniej go ignorowałem.

2 PM. Time for a nap, and after one hour, another approach to lone drinking, at 3 PM I begin and at 5:30 I take another half of a cup of ayahuasca. Half an hour later serious journey begins. Words are not enough here. It lasts late into the night, comes back, decreases, comes back again, carries me into darkness, there are thoughts about death and inevitable sadness, but also colourful fireworks, very good ride on the jew’s harp, working with breath. It is hard to believe it is lasting so long, I guess all those cups accumulated, I look from time to time on my watch, in an hour so many things happen, so many visions appear, one can not remember them all. I am trying to listen to inside hints, self guidance, what to do now, what step to take, how to change that particular state that starts to annoy, how to direct a “bad trip”. Beautiful journey, I am learning to swim. First navigation that is professional and independent to that extent, without no one assisting me, no one else present. After a long silence my own voice sounds surprising. I am working on the border of action and non-action, I am working on balance. Too long passiveness is bringing me into strange dead-end alleys of the mind, loops of vision – so when intuition silently tells me – overcome your laziness, get up, use the opportunity to ride on the music, take a sip of water, smoke mapacho, change position, be active – so then I follow. I listen to inner guide, so many times before ignored. Do not be lazy, laziness has a price. Despite all this it is a hard, long night, full of tossing and turning, sighs and exhaustion.

Czwartek 02.10 – wstaję na chwilę by zjeść śniadanie i śpię dalej do południa, no bo cóż tu robić innego. Jedynie po południu, po kolejnym spacerze czeka nowy punkt, wywar z tytoniu do wypicia.

Thursday, 02.10 – I get up to eat my breakfast, Joel is back, he was stuck with heavy diarrhea in Huambe, very exhausting. After breakfast I go back to sleep, what else is there to do. In the afternoon, after another walk, there is a highlight, tobacco infusion to drink.

More dizziness and nausea, after some time I try to eat something and finally vomit. Great purge, and real diet would be actually only beginning now. I am weakened but I am still all right, Joel says that some after drinking tobacco juice they stumble down on the ground. Now tobacco will be working inside me, but I should stick to the diet for another 9 days.

Let me see how can I handle the other requirements of dieta – the restrictions about food or sex seem to be easy, but I can’t stay any more on my own in that forest, with my thoughts, I can’t stand this bloody inactivity. In the night heavy downpour turns the paths into muddy nightmare, combined with steep slopes it becomes a hardcore survival for my body weakened by diet and inactive days, burdened by heavy backpacks. Around noon we reach Huambe, where Joel’s home is, and I fall down into a hammock, knowing for sure that I will not go to Iquitos today. Joel also has reasons to enjoy this stop.

I am back in primates’ kingdom, with their games, emotions, very real, physical world, where dreamy vision gives place to red desire, liana brews are less popular than those from sugar cane, and children have children, as nature teaches them, bearing fruit as example everywhere around, not planning or considering, just replicating, spreading life. Here age of 15 is a good time for first child, and as Marina, Joel’s girlfriend is three years older, she gave him a daughter. Joel is 66 but he has been using Amazonian natural medicines for years, and perhaps that is better proof of its effectiveness than all this esoteric stuff and turbid as jungle puddle conclusions that I produced in seclusion. Hello apes, my tribe.
